First-Year Intern Recruitment

The Intern Council is a group of six first-year students who will be able to gain valuable experience and insights into the functioning of various commissions within the society. Specifically, each intern has the unique opportunity to shadow different commissioners and the President. Each intern will also complete a First-Year Intern Project, giving them the chance to design or contribute to a meaningful initiative of their own. This council offers hands-on experience, allowing interns to contribute to the society's initiatives and develop essential skills in their chosen areas. Interviews will be held for this position. Volunteers will be expected to dedicate ~2-4 hours a week. Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to fulfilling tasks delegated by the corresponding commissioner.

  • The President’s Intern supports the HSS President by gaining first-hand experience of the executive role and understanding how student governance works. This includes assisting with administrative tasks, attending key meetings, and participating in special projects. The role offers a unique opportunity to learn leadership, organizational management, and internal affairs in a collaborative, hands-on environment. This is a volunteer position with a time commitment of approximately 2-4 hours/week. May vary during peak event/meeting periods.

    Typical Tasks & Responsibilities

    • Assist the President with administrative duties (ex. inventory management, document organization).

    • Attend AMS Assembly and key HSS meetings alongside the President to observe and learn.

    • Chair the First-Year Intern Council, encouraging discussion and collaboration amongst all interns

    • Lead an independent or collaborative intern project

    • Brainstorm and implement creative initiatives to increase transparency, student engagement, and understanding of HSS.

  • Description: The I-EDIAA (Indigenization - Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Anti-Racism, and Accessibility) First-Year Intern works closely with the I-EDIAA Commissioner to support I-EDIAA events, internal reviews, resource compilation, and student advocacy. This position is an opportunity to gain experience in promoting I-EDIAA within the BHSc community and share their own lived experiences and related perspectives on I-EDIAA issues across HSS initiatives and the larger Queen’s community.

    Typical Tasks & Responsibilities:

    • Assisting with the planning and execution of I-EDIAA events and programs

    • Learning more about I-EDIAA and helping integrate these practices and their perspectives into the HSS’ activities and goals

    • Meeting with the I-EDIAA Commissioner on a needs basis

    • Engaging with first-year students to raise awareness about I-EDIAA issues, increase involvement and engagement with I-EDIAA initiatives, and compiling and amplifying I-EDIAA concerns

    • Organizing one I-EDIAA project with support from the I-EDIAA Commissioner

  • As the Internal Affairs Commission Intern for the Health Sciences Society (HSS), you will support the transparency and efficiency of HSS operations. The role places you at the heart of Assembly proceedings, where attention to detail, strong communication, and professionalism are key. You’ll also contribute to at least one commission project, gaining experience in governance, teamwork, and the behind-the-scenes processes that keep the Society running smoothly.

    Typical Tasks & Responsibilities:

    • Serve as the HSS Assembly scribe by taking accurate and comprehensive meeting minutes

    • Upload approved meeting minutes to the HSS website in a timely manner

    • Participate in at least one Internal Affairs project (e.g., governance updates, volunteer training, internal policy review)

    • Collaborate with the Internal Affairs team on ongoing initiatives and planning

    • Assist with administrative tasks such as scheduling, document organization, and record-keeping

  • Responsible for organizing HSS events, coordinating logistics with the commissioner and deputy, and being in a front-facing role of the HSS community commission. The community intern will have an opportunity to provide new ideas to facilitate a stronger community network amongst Health Sciences student.

    Typical Tasks & Responsibilities:

    • Assist with planning and organizing community-building events (e.g., socials, fundraisers, volunteer initiatives)

    • Engage with students at events to promote inclusivity and participation

    • Contribute new ideas to foster connection and engagement within the student body

    • Support the Commissioner and Deputy in general administrative or project-based tasks

  • As the First-Year Intern for the HSS Clubs Commission, you will help support the oversight and organization of all HSS-ratified clubs. Typical tasks include assisting with communications to clubs, helping organize council related events across clubs (i.e., club fair), and support club ratification and renewal processes. Time commitment is ~2–3 hours per week, and you will report directly to the Clubs Commissioner and/or Deputy.

    Typical Tasks & Responsibilities:

    • Assist with drafting and sending communications/announcements to clubs

    • Help plan, promote, and organize cross-club events such as the HSS Club Fair

    • Support the ratification and renewal process for new and existing clubs

    • Collaborate with Clubs Commissioner/Deputy on administrative or project-based tasks

    • Provide general support to ensure smooth operations within the Clubs Commission

  • The Marketing Intern works with the Marketing Commission to design and create visually appealing content (e.g. videos, graphics, illustrations) for HSS social media platforms to increase student interaction and engagement. The ideal candidate will have excellent verbal and written communication skills to craft quality content and collaborate alongside the Marketing Deputy and Commissioner to fulfill projects in a timely manner. While it is not a requirement, experience with graphic design platforms like Canva, and knowledge of how to create/post content on Instagram, TikTok, and other platforms is an asset. Time Commitment: ~2-3 hours/week, attending scheduled commission-wide Marketing meeting.

    Typical Tasks & Responsibilities:

    • Assist in brainstorming, planning, and executing marketing campaigns for HSS events and initiatives

    • Design digital content (graphics, posters, reels, TikToks, stories) that align with HSS branding

    • Help with website upkeep

    • Collaborate with the Marketing Deputy, Commissioner, and other interns on team projects

    • Provide general support to ensure smooth operations within the Marketing Commission

Peer Tutoring Recruitment

Peer Tutors provide one-on-one assistance for students having difficulty with specific courses. One-to-one tutors will have pre-booked appointments with student learners and help student learners to practice, review and master previously taught course content. Tutors also provide helpful study tips to student learners to aid in their ongoing learning. You will work closely with the HSS Peer Tutor Chair.

The ideal candidates will have:

  • An excellent understanding of their academic program

  • Good study habits, positive attitude towards learning

  • Good interpersonal skills and be able to explain course material clearly

  • Excellent level of organization, responsibility, reliability and punctuality; ability to work independently

  • Motivation to be a helper

  • Flexibility and professionalism are required

Volunteer Recruitment

Volunteers play an integral role in HSS operations, enabling the society to support and enrich the experiences of BHSc students. The HSS is committed to opening positions for all BHSc students, including online and first-year students. From organizing events, tutoring peers, participating in EDI+I focused initiatives, creating opportunities for professional development, and more, volunteering for the HSS represents an opportunity to become involved in the student community while developing unique skills and capabilities.

Volunteer Eligibility:

Applicants must be BHSc students and HSS members who have paid the HSS fee.

Applicants must be in good academic standing as defined by their program.

Club and Committee Co-Chairs are ineligible to apply for the same position or a position of ‘lower’ status.

Elections

Elected executives and representatives are voting members of the HSS, representing their cohort at Council and Assembly meetings. Students interested in running for an elected position are invited to attend the HSS elections information session on January 15, and request an election nomination package by emailing internalaffairs@hss.queensu.ca by January 18, 2024.

Eligibility:

All HSS election candidates must be students enrolled in the BHSc program and HSS members in good standing.

Year/Online student representatives must be a member of the student cohort they intend to represent.

Students may not run for multiple HSS-elected positions concurrently.
