Our Initiatives
The Health Sciences Society aims to improve BHSc student experience and provide opportunities for professional development while upholding our core values of equity, fairness, and transparency.
From orientation and career conferences to research workshops and mental health, over 50 HSS student volunteers spanning 6 commissions work throughout the year to develop a positive program culture.
Check out our ongoing initiatives and past events below.
HSS
Formal
The HSS Formal is an annual initiative planned by the Community Commission. Lead by the Formal Deputy, the Formal Committee is responsible for planning and coordinating all logistical components needed to host a successful spring HSS formal.
It is our hope that this formal provides students with an opportunity to socialize with fellow classmates and celebrate their accomplishments.
Formal updates and themes are available on our Instagram.
Peer
Tutoring
HSS Peer Tutoring is an opportunity for BHSc students to build a sense of community and support their peers. Peer tutors are students who have previously taken the courses, and offer their expertise to other students.
Research
Workshops
The HSS Research workshops are an annual series of workshops by professors and professionals in the field who share their daily life, work, and journey. There are also opportunities throughout the workshops to get hands-on experience (for example, suturing workshops and how to code in R)!
These workshops aim to allow students to dip their toes in academia and learn more about different types of research.
At the end of the workshops, students who have attended all sessions will receive a certificate of completion signed by the co-director of our program, Dr. Adams, which can be used to acquire your own research positions.
